  • Potatoes are swollen underground stems known as tubers
  • Potatoes are made of starch but some plants store their food as sugars (example sugar cane)
  • Trees also store food in the roots to survive the winter. 
  Types of Stems
  • Runner - horizontal stems that grow above ground (ex. strawberry plant).
  • Corms - underground stems (ex. Crocus and gladioli)
  • Rhizomes - underground stems that allow the plant to spread underground (ex. Cattails).
